Alien was alien

I was watching Alien for the first time last night in preparation for the movie Prometheus, and as the ship officer Kane was being ripped open by a newborn alien it dawned upon me that I HAVE to see more of the "classic" movies. I was mind blown. For a movie that was produced in 1979, I couldn't believe how awesome this was.

I realize now what a poor job the people who raised me have done in educating me in American pop culture. I also realize there are bigger priorities than this, but I have to say I've been severely denied. So many times in my life during a rather pleasant discussion, someone will say, "Its like in that movie _______." And all I have to offer to the conversation is a nod and a stare in the fruitless hopes they don't recognize the complete and total blank in my head. Usually, people notice. And then usually I'm left feeling (for lack of a better word) just dumb.

So in the upcoming excess of free time I will have after graduation, I hope to expand my knowledge not only through watching more movies, but reading more books. (I have dozens sitting around collecting dust). A few of the many movies/books that I haven't watched/read yet include:
1984
Brave New World
The Boondock Saints
Aliens (this will be remedied tonight :D)
and the list goes on.... (I can't remember the good ones at the moment but I will update later)

I think sometimes people underestimate the value of being submersed in their own culture. I feel slightly that because I haven't read these certain books, and seen the good old movies, I don't quite know myself or the world I live in as well as I could. I'm looking forward to enjoying these classics as if they just came out last week. I guess my friends will have to put up with my ranting and raving about how awesome a 30 year old movie is.

As one of my old bosses said, "If its been out for over 35 years, you can't really whine about spoilers."
